Black Friday has taken over from Boxing Day as the biggest shopping day of the year. Here’s how to make the most of it

What is Black Friday?

Falling the day after Thanksgiving in the US (the third Thursday in November), thanks to the Internet everyone can now enjoy the holiday savings on offer.

Everything from cars to clothes and electronics to holidays will be reduced, sometimes dramatically.

It can be a great opportunity to bag a bargain on something you’ve been waiting to buy, and for nailing the Christmas shopping.

How to win at Black Friday

It can be a bit overwhelming with all these offers clamouring for your attention, and it’s easy to end up with the wrong thing (or too many things if you get carried away). Which? has a handy list of tips for navigating the day online and in store, such as setting up online accounts in advance to save time.

How to find the best deals on Black Friday

There will be discounts on everything you can imagine, from fridges to smartphones, but how do you know what the best deal is? The Independent has done a round-up of top deals on electronics, and provided a list of links to the biggest retailers’ Black Friday offers, like M&S and Tesco. The Telegraph has rooted out some of the best deals on homewares, beauty, gaming and more.

John Lewis has also explained how Black Friday will work with its Never Knowingly Undersold policy. It says it will be checking and responding to competitors' promotions. But prices change more quickly online, so if you’re in-store it’s worth checking the website as they will match the online price if it’s cheaper.

Buying a new car on Black Friday

What’s Cyber Monday?

Why have one shopping day when you can have two? Cyber Monday is the Monday after Black Friday and has become one of the biggest online shopping days of the year, offering another opportunity to save.

Clothes and accessories are a bigger deal on Cyber Monday than on Black Friday, although there are still plenty of discounts on electronics, too.

Radio Times has put together a comprehensive guide to Cyber Monday and some of the best deals to look out for.

To counteract all this consumerism, the US has also started Giving Tuesday on the following day, to encourage people to help those less fortunate.

How to avoid scams on Black Friday

To complicate matters, some retailers sneakily push up their prices in the weeks before to make their Black Friday offers seem like an even better deal. There can also be gaps between the prices you see online and in-store.
