Cunard cruise guide: ocean cruise liner

A holiday on board a Cunard cruise ship is a luxurious way to see the world, and we've got the expert guide to preparing for your trip

Thinking of a cruise? Find out how to choose your holiday and accommodation, and how to make the most of your time on the ship.

The choice of cruise holidays can be overwhelming, so it’s a good idea to start with a shorter trip before you commit to a long stay on board. Cunard offer a number of two-night breaks from the UK to Bruges and Hamburg, or even around England from Southampton to Liverpool.

Then think about what you’d like to do on your holiday. Are you hoping for excursions on-shore to different locations as you travel, or would you prefer to enjoy activities on board, which can include swimming, theatre shows, fine dining, cocktail bars, a library, spa or shopping?

No matter what you have planned, booking your Cunard Cruise through Barrhead Travel will make your holiday even more exquisite. Allowing you to add flights from a variety of departure points and pick from the best pre and post cruise accommodation, Barrhead Travel’s dedicated experts can help you sit back, relax and enjoy your entire trip knowing everything is taken care of.

The Cunard fleet of ships

The Cunard fleet includes the Queen Mary 2, which sails across the Atlantic to New York, and the Queen Victoria, for voyages to Iceland, the fjords of Norway, and the Mediterranean. There's also the Queen Elizabeth, which sails to Australia, Japan and East Asia. Find out more about the ships at the Cunard page on the Barrhead Travel website

Event cruises are also offered, where you can enjoy talks and learning experiences from experts and specialists on-board and through excursions. Trips planned include a European ‘Voyage Du Vin’ with three wine experts including Oz Clarke, a Literature Festival at sea with author Louis de Bernières, ‘The Last Frontier’ trip to Alaska from the Insights programme, and a special transatlantic trip in partnership with the English National Ballet, with classes and performances from the Lead Principal and First Soloist.

Your room on board a Cunard ship is called a stateroom, and the choice ranges from inside rooms and those with ocean views, suites including a luxurious Grand suite with a private deck, king-sized bedroom and twin bathrooms, and butler service.

24 hours after you’ve made a booking you can log into your  Cunard Voyage Personaliser, where you can check all the details of your trip. You’ll see a ‘To Do’ list to help you track the days until your holiday and where you can upload essential documents.

You may need visas if you’re visiting certain countries around the world, and you’ll be informed about this in your holiday information booklet. It’s also a condition that you must have travel insurance for all cruises, even within the British Isles, including cover for all pre-existing medical conditions.

The White Star Luggage Service can transport your luggage from your home directly to the ship, so you can travel more simply. You can also take advantage of the car parking available through Cruise and Passenger Services (they will even move your car, if your cruise returns to a different terminal than it departed).

Spend a day on a cruise ship

If you’ve haven’t travelled with Cunard in the last five years, and don’t have a cruise booked for the future, you can find out what it’s like on board by visiting either the Queen Mary 2, Queen Victoria or Queen Elizabeth ships when they’re in Southampton. The ship visits cost £50 per person (with at least £5 donated to Cunard’s chosen charity, The Prince’s Trust) and includes a three-course lunch on board, along with a tour of the public areas and any available staterooms.

If you then choose a cruise of seven nights or more and book before 30 April 2019 you’ll receive double the complimentary on-board spending money*. For example, if you book a 12-night 2019 voyage you’ll be given $400 to spend on board per stateroom. You can secure your voyage with just a 5% deposit. For more information visit the Cunard page on the Barrhead Travel website.

*Based on 12 night 2019 voyages in a balcony. Amount shown is per stateroom, based on 2 sharing, and includes Cunard Fare on board spending money and additional on board spending money. Book an applicable 2019 Cunard Fare holiday and receive additional on board spending money to spend during your voyage in the on-board shops, bars, photo and art galleries and on internet packages, restaurants, spa and shore excursions booked on board. Applicable to new Cunard Fare bookings on selected voyages of 7 nights or more departing 2019 booked by 30 April 2019. On board spending money is additional to the Cunard Fare benefit of on board spending money/car parking/return coach travel (choice of benefit dependent on cruise type, duration and time of booking). On board spending money amount shown includes the Cunard Fare benefit of on board spending money plus the additional on board spending money, which doubles the total. On board spending money can only be spent whilst on board. Offer is only applicable to Cunard Fare bookings and cannot be exchanged for a cash alternative. 5% deposit offers are valid until 30 April 2019 on selected 2019 departures departing from 1 May 2019.
