Tour of the Southern Ireland Coast from Waterford to Killarney

7 days, 6 nights

1 night Waterford - Thursday

1 night Kinsale - Friday

3 nights Killarney - Saturday, Sunday, Monday

1 night Waterford - Tuesday

All hotels have been chosen for their comfort and secure car parking arrangements. Tulip road books will be provided for the scenic routes to Killarney and the day trips from the hotel. Nothing competitive, no rushing about required, a nice relaxing drive along a spectacular coast

Day 1 – early afternoon ferry crossing (included in cost) from Fishguard to Rosslaire followed by the drive to Waterford and the Fitzwilton Hotel, with dinner included.

Day 2 – breakfast then optional visit to Waterford Crystal - need to pre-book

From Waterford follow the Tulip Roadbook along the coast to Kinsale, via Dunmore East, a designated National Fishery Harbour, then to Tramore and along the picturesque Copper Coast Drive to Dungarvon, a possible lunch stop. Then inland to Lismore and over the Vee Pass, which is a gap in the Knockmealdown Mountains with panoramic views of the Golden Vale pastureland and via Cork to our overnight stop at the Macdonald’s Hotel just outside Kinsale, with dinner. (Mileage – ~150 miles)

Day 3 – breakfast then maybe a walk around the pretty town of Kinsale with its narrow streets and eye-catching shops and a brief look at Charles Fort. On the road around the southern tip of Ireland, heading for Killarney, passing the Old Head of Kinsale Lighthouse into Timoleague and on to Courtmcsherry and Clonakilty for coffee at the Inchydoney Hotel. Carrying on we will pass through Skibereen, Ballydehob, Schull and on to the Mizzen Head. This is the most south-westerly point in Ireland and we will visit the Mizzen Head Signal Station, which opened in 1910, and cross the iconic Mizzen Footbridge with its breath-taking sea views. On then to Durrus and Kilcrohane and up over the Goat’s Pass with even more spectacular views across Roaringwater, Dunmanus and Bantry Bays, and over to Castletownbere, Bere Island and Durnsey island. Lunch is a possibility with a stop in Bantry then up through the Cara Pass and into Kerry, through the town of Kenmare and over the famous Moll’s Gap and down into Killarney, with views of the lakes. You will arrive quite late in the afternoon at the excellent Randles Court Hotel after a memorable day’s drive in time to freshen up and dinner.

(Mileage – ~140 miles)

Day 4 – breakfast then this can be a day of leisure, visiting nearby Muckross House or a slow drive through alongside the lakes that linked through the Gap of Dunloe. Very popular with the tourists, there are horse-drawn carriages should you so choose. The afternoon can be a drive round the Dingle peninsular and back to the hotel. You are free to make your own arrangements for dinner with many options to choose from in the very lively town.

Day 5 – breakfast and a scenic drive round the Ring of Kerry, a must for any visitor. We choose to go anti-clockwise via Killorglin, Glenbeigh, Cahersiveen, Waterville and Kenmare and back to the hotel. Again, free to make you own dinner arrangements in the town. (Mileage - 110 miles)

Day 6 – breakfast and depart Killarney for Waterford, with an easy 50 mile drive through Cork to Cobh (pronounced Cove) and on to Midleton and  its connections with Titanic, and the opportunity to visit the famous Blarney Castle, Blarney Wollen Mills and the Jamieson Whisky Centre. We are left with a 50 mile drive along the coast through Yougal back to Waterford and our Fitzwilton Hotel in time for dinner.

Day 7 – early ferry crossing at 9.00, breakfast may need to be taken on board and back to Fishguard. The alternative ferry crossing from Dublin can be arranged.
