A welcome return to this privately owned modern hotel which was built on the site of the old East Gate of the roman city of Lindum Collonia and has a full view of the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral. You will be able to visit the Cathedral and admire one of the finest buildings in England. In its day it had two huge spires which before one collapsed it was one of the tallest buildings in the world. Just a short walk around the corner and you find the Lincoln Castle. Re-opened in 2015 after a £22 million renovation. The castle built nearly 1000 years ago on the site of the old Roman fortress and on the orders of William the Conquer. It has seen many bloody battles in its history. In 1215 Baron's forced King John to sign the Magna Carter and one of 40 copies were placed in the Cathedral, now only four remain and Lincoln is still the proud owner of its original copy. Take a walk around the Castle walls now fully open and enjoy the view of the city and its surrounding area from the walls, also visit the Victorian prison exactly as it was in the 19 century or see where the public executions took place and the burial site of the unlucky felons. You can also visit the Magna Carta Vaults where the Magna Carta (1215) and the Charter of the Forest (1217) are kept.
You can buy a dual ticket to both venues for £16 with re-entry within six months, concessions are available for £13 (2016 prices).
There are many more places to visit including the Collection and the Usher Art Gallery, the medieval Bishops Palace or the Museum of Lincolnshire life. Take a walk down into the heart of this modern city and visit the Brayford pool a waterway in the centre of the city with the Fossway, a Roman built waterway used to transport Roman soldiers quickly by boat to the city of York. Lincoln is situated on the top of a hill where the old parts of the city can be found and there are various and regular buses which can take you down to the lower city where shops and hostelries can be found.
2017 will celebrate the 800 years of the signing of the Charter of the Forest by King John.
