About the event

7.30pm to 9.30pm, Thursday 14 March 2024

The Dorset Group is inviting you to join a talk by Anne Brown of Shire Hall Dorset on 150 years of Courtroom drama

Shire hall was the centre of justice and local government from 1797 to 1955. The Georgian courtroom was the scene of famous and infamous trials throughout this period from the internationally significant Tolpuddle Martyrs to Martha Brown, said to be the inspiration for Thomas Hardy;s Tess o'th Dubervilles.

Also fascinating are the tales of the ordinary Dorset men and women who found themselves in the dock throughout the 19th Century. The talk will look at some of these stories alongside the history of the building

We hope to see you there!
