A New Free Talk!
This is a talk for Swindon Boundless members which will be delivered by Terry Bracher (Heritage Services Manager, Wiltshire Council), entitled Horrible and Unusual Witshire History.
The precis of Terry's talk:
Over several years at the History Centre I have been collecting and blogging of curious stories from our archives covering topics from pre-history to the twentieth century, including tales of intrigue and murder, horrible ailments, cures and death, political chicanery, strange animals, weird weather and some interesting inventions. My talk will highlight some of these stories and provide some historical context. It is designed hopefully to entertain as well as inform.
Please also read interesting information about our speaker Terry Bracher:
I have worked at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre since 2007, originally as Archives and Local Studies Manager, before becoming Heritage Services manager in 2016. Previously, I was Senior Librarian for Shropshire Records and Research Centre (now Shropshire Archives) and Local Studies Librarian for Northamptonshire.
In addition to collecting horrible and curious stories, I have an interest in the Seventeenth Century, co- authoring a book on Shropshire in the Civil War and British Black History, co-editing and contributing to publications relating to Northamptonshire Black history and was a member of a national working party on Black & Asian Archives.
I am also Chair of the Local Studies Group of CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals) and Chair the judging panel of the Alan Ball Awards for Local History publications.
