Celebrate the 75th anniversary of VE Day with us on this very special Boundless members’ day out at Royal Gunpowder Mills in Essex.

This is one day out that’s certain to go with a bang as we visit what Historic England calls ‘the most important site for the history of explosives in Europe’. Starting as a small family business, Royal Gunpower Mills rose in importance to service the country’s military needs during the First and Second World Wars, then becoming a top-secret research centre during the Cold War.

The site only opens its doors a few days a year, so this is a wonderful opportunity to have a look round and hear from the team about the amazing history of the place, especially as Saturday 9 May will see the venue celebrating the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe day.

As part of that celebration, military re-enactors from across the UK and Europe will transform parts of the site into scenes from the Second World War, while other areas will be recreating a traditional 1940s street party – expect singing and dancing! Plus the new and improved Women at War exhibition will tell you more about what went on at home while the men were away fighting.

Nature is also a vital part of what Royal Gunpower Mills is all about, with its old buildings, woodlands and waterways collectively forming a rather unique nature reserve for a range of animals and birds. Bring your binoculars to catch a glimpse of species including barn owls, herons and fallow deer.

The Boundless team will be on hand throughout the day – pop by and see us at the Mixing House (built in 1787) and we’ll make sure you have everything you need to make the most of your day. Set yourself up for the day with free tea, coffee and cake and don’t forget to pick up your free guide book and kids’ activity packs. Your name will also be entered in a prize draw for all kinds of 1940s and rocket-themed goodies. One of the Royal Gunpowder Mills heritage team will also be hosting several talks in the members’ room and will be able to answer any of your questions about this fascinating site.

Can I bring my dog?

The venue is a dog-friendly attraction and you’re welcome to take dogs into most of the historic exhibits. We ask that you:

  • clear up any accidents
  • ensure that you are respectful of other visitors who may not share your love for dogs

Please do not leave your dog in your car at any time.
