The Spitfire Kids

Decade upon decade of films and TV programmes have portrayed our allied wartime heroes as grown-up men and women. The rather poignant truth, though, is that the Battle of Britain, for example, was largely fought and won by teenagers. The average age of an RAF fighter pilot was just 20, with many of the men and women who designed and built their planes even younger than that.

In this Boundless member event Alasdair Cross, bestselling author of Spitfire: The People’s Story, will be talking us through the personal diaries and memoirs of the teenagers who risked everything to design, build and fly the most famous warplane that ever took to the skies.

These are the voices of a generation who won a battle that turned a war. It’s a story of love and loss, of young people tested to the very limits of their endurance.
