1. Enjoy a spooky Halloween experience

People often claim that Halloween is for kids, but there are fun things for people of all ages to participate in when the annual spookfest comes around at the end of October. At the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, there’s an immersive Halloween trail from 18 October to 3 November, giving families the chance to see this world-famous attraction in a creepy new light. 

Virgin Experience Days also offers a range of activities that would be perfect for Halloween, including tickets to see Wicked in London’s West End, an opportunity to conjure up magical cocktails and a visit to The Gunpowder Plot Immersive Experience. It makes a change from trick or treating!

2. Take an autumnal break

Autumn is the season when leaves change colour, turning woodlands into stunning tapestries of brown, red and gold. To witness this spectacle in its full glory, take a half-term break at Whitemead Forest Park, the Boundless-owned resort deep in the Forest of Dean. 3. Steam ahead to Christmas festivities

As with every Railway Touring Company trip, these are scenic journeys to beautiful, historical cities that are a delight to explore – and you could even join in with an exclusive carol service on a trip to Sherborne. Father Christmas and his elves will visit the Saturday trains with presents for children on board, and you have the option to book Premier Dining, First or, with Standard, take advantage of the buffet car for refreshments. 

There are also several trips to choose from before the Christmas timetable begins, including an Armistice Steam Express on 11 November – so you don’t have to wait for a festive trip to enjoy a ride on a steam train!

4. Take a road trip in a motorhome

If you love exploring different places when you go on holiday, then hiring a motorhome could be perfect for you. Not only does it enable you to move from one location to another at your leisure, and bring you closer to the great outdoors – it’s also a huge amount of fun.

5. Treat the kids to an all-action blockbuster

If you have children or grandchildren, thinking of things to do with them during the October half-term can be a challenge – especially if the weather isn’t great. How about taking them to the cinema? Older kids are sure to love Transformers One (released 11 October), the new, animated blockbuster that’s based on the popular sci-fi franchise.

Directed by Josh Cooley (Toy Story 4), and featuring a stellar voice cast that includes Avengers stars Chris Hemsworth and Scarlett Johansson, this origin story delves into the history of the Transformers and the events that turned Optimus Prime and Megatron from staunch friends to sworn enemies. With stunning graphics and action aplenty, it promises to be a big-screen blast.

6. Go behind the scenes at your favourite football club

The new football season is in full swing, bringing with it passion and excitement in spades. But have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at your favourite club?

To find out, take a stadium tour – there are several to choose from on Kids Pass, including Arsenal, Fulham, Liverpool and Man City, and in most cases you’ll get the chance to explore the dressing rooms, the tunnel area and the manager’s dugout, as well as discovering the full history of the club. It’s a must for any footy fan.

7. Attend an historic ceremony

And one of the country’s most enduring traditions is the Ceremony of the Keys, a ritual that’s seen the Chief Yeoman Warder, alongside a troop from the Tower’s military garrison, lock the gates to the Tower of London every night for over 700 years.

8. Book a space-themed day out

If black dwarves and boomerang nebulas stimulate your curiosity, then you might be interested to know that this year’s World Space Week takes place between 4 and 10 October. While the various activities being held across the UK aren’t discounted to Boundless members, why not use this annual event as an excuse to book your tickets for our Winter Solstice Member Day at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire on Saturday 14 December.
