Assistant Finance Controller
Contract: Permanent
Location: Britannia House, Brighton
Working hours: 34.5 hrs per week (Flexible hybrid workplace)
We're looking for an experienced and ambitious Assistant Financial Controller to join our Finance team.
This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified or part-qualified finance professional who enjoys combining technical excellence with practical problem-solving. Reporting to the Financial Controller, you'll play a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity and compliance of the Group's financial reporting, while supporting the wider Finance function and helping drive continuous improvement.
You'll act as a trusted deputy to the Financial Controller, getting involved in everything from statutory reporting and audit management to financial controls, payroll oversight and regulatory compliance.
The role
What you’ll be doing:
· Support the delivery of accurate and timely monthly, quarterly and year-end financial reporting.
· Prepare and review balance sheet reconciliations and investigate any variances or discrepancies.
· Assist with statutory accounts preparation and manage relationships with external auditors.
· Support tax and regulatory reporting, including VAT and other statutory submissions.
· Help maintain strong financial controls and identify opportunities to improve processes and efficiency.
· Oversee key financial accounting activities including journals, accruals and month-end reporting.
· Partner with People & Culture and our payroll provider to ensure payroll is accurate, compliant and appropriately controlled.
· Support treasury activities, cash management and banking processes.
· Assist with FCA compliance, risk management and governance requirements.
· Contribute to Board and Audit & Risk Committee reporting.
· Deputise for the Financial Controller when required and provide guidance to colleagues across the Finance team.
What We're Looking For
We're interested in people who can demonstrate:
· Previous experience within a Financial Accounting, Financial Control or Assistant Financial Controller role.
· Strong technical accounting knowledge and understanding of financial controls.
· Experience supporting audits and statutory reporting.
· Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
· Confidence working with colleagues across different teams and levels of the organisation.
· A proactive approach, with the ability to identify issues and drive solutions.
· Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
Qualifications
We're open to applications from:
· Qualified accountants (ACA, ACCA or CIMA), or
· Individuals working towards a professional accounting qualification who can demonstrate relevant experience.
