The events of 6 June 1944 – Operation Overlord and the D-Day landings – are without question some of the most written about events of the 20th century. Eighty years on, around three million people gathered in France to commemorate this historic anniversary – but how accurate is some of the media coverage that accompanied the 80th anniversary?
In this member-exclusive online event, Normandy historian and author Paul Woodadge will examine some common misconceptions about the landings and the events surrounding them, from the assault on Omaha Beach to the failure of the German army to send reinforcements that could have countered the invasion. Paul will be talking about how stories are passed down through the years, and how the public collective memory of famous events in history influences how they are written about.
We’ll also be giving away three copies of Pauls book, World War 11 Battles fields, Battle Sites Today.
