Minions & Monsters - 3 July

The seventh instalment in the Despicable Me franchise, and the third film in the Minions prequel series, Pierre Coffin’s latest comedy caper features a star-studded cast, with Jesse Eisenberg, Christoph Waltz and Jeff Bridges among those lending their voice talents. This time around, the hilarious yellow critters go in search of monsters to appear in their own Hollywood movie. What could possibly go wrong?

The Invite - 3 July

Olivia Wilde’s English-language remake of the Spanish film The People Upstairs stars Seth Rogen and Wilde herself as a bickering couple whose marriage is turned on its head after their neighbours (played by Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton) invite them to their weekly orgies. A hit at the Sundance Film Festival, the film has been described as “marvellously entertaining”. You’re invited to find out for yourself.

Moana - 10 July

If you enjoyed the 2016 Disney animation Moana, and its 2024 sequel, then you won’t want to miss Thomas Kail’s live-action take on the island adventure. Catherine Laga’aia makes her screen debut as the titular heroine, while Dwayne Johnson – who voiced Maui in the two animated films – reprises his role as the shape-shifting demigod. Also listen out for a bunch of new songs by Lin Manuel Miranda – you’ll be whistling the melodies long after the curtains have come down.

The Odyssey - 17 July

A movie adaptation of Homer’s epic fable sounds heavy going, but if anyone can make it work, it’s Christopher Nolan. The British director has roped in a truly stellar cast to tell the story of a legendary king’s journey home from the Trojan War, with Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway and Charlize Theron just some of the big names on the list. Whether The Odyssey can scoop as many Oscars as Nolan’s last film, Oppenheimer, remains to be seen.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day - 31 July

Not to be outdone by their rivals at DC, Marvel also have a new superhero movie coming this summer. Following the spell cast by Dr Strange in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker (Tom Holland) has been forgotten about by the people of New York, so finds himself protecting the city anonymously. However, his powers are evolving in unexpected ways… Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, this fourth film in the MCU Spider-Man series promises to be one of the best.

Two words: Jason Statham.
