About the tripJoin fellow Boundless members for a summer tour of Selby Abbey, one of North Yorkshire’s most iconic landmarks. The guided tour starts at around 11:00 AM and will last approximately one hour. Before the tour, tea, coffee, and light refreshments can be purchased at the Abbey café. Selby Abbey has a fascinating history: founded in 1069, it became one of Yorkshire’s wealthiest religious sites and was visited by royalty. It survived a 14th-century fire and Henry VIII’s dissolution, only to fall into decay, with its central tower collapsing in the 17th century. The Abbey was fully restored in the 19th century, though a second fire in 1906 caused major damage. A nationwide restoration fund helped rebuild it, creating the historic treasure we see today. In more recent times, Selby Abbey made history in 1969 as the first parish church where Queen Elizabeth II distributed Maundy Money. It has also become a popular destination for international visitors, including fans of a major Far Eastern pop star who married here in 2015. After the guided tour, there will be some free time to explore the Abbey and its gift shop. We will then take a short 15-minute drive to Selby Bowling Club, where a buffet lunch of sandwiches, chips, and cake will be served at 1:00 PM. There is ample free parking at the club. Details of parking in Selby, including any charges, will be provided closer to the date. This event is open to all Boundless members and is a wonderful opportunity to explore history, enjoy good company, and share the experience with fellow members. Everyone is welcome, whether you are a history enthusiast or simply looking for a lovely summer outing. |
