Turn Halloween into an educational experience with the help of WWT. The organisation is running a wide range of themed activities across its nine UK sites, giving younger kids the chance to learn about nature while letting their imaginations run wild. From making a willow wand to mixing a magical marshland potion, hunting for weird and wonderful fungi to investigating owl pellets, there’s plenty to keep them entertained. Cinemas nationwide

For sheer visceral thrills, nothing beats watching a scary movie on the big screen – and there are plenty to choose from in the run-up to Halloween. Psychological thriller Verity, starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, arrives in cinemas on 2 October, with Jessica Chastain horror Other Mommy following on 9 October. Comic-book capers meet creepy horror in the new DC thriller Clayface (from 23 October), while fans of the BBC comedy Ghosts won’t want to miss the gang’s cinema debut in The Possession of Button House (from 23 October). Younger filmgoers aren’t left out, either, with the new Aardman Animations blockbuster Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom (from 31 October) combining Halloween hijinks with baa-baa belly laughs.

Fright Nights: 25 Years of Fear

There’s a reason Thorpe Park’s annual Fright Nights event has been running for 25 years – this award-winning event is crammed with fearsome fun. Complementing the usual array of scare zones and live performers, this year sees the introduction of an all-new scare maze, Tenement, which plunges visitors into near-total darkness. If your nerves aren’t completely shredded after all that, experience some of the park’s notorious white-knuckle rides, including Hyperia – the UK’s tallest rollercoaster – and the horror movie themed SAW: The Ride. Howl’o’ween

Chessington World of Adventures, Surrey, 3, 4, 10, 11 and 17 October – 1 November

If you head down to Chessington for this Halloween extravaganza, you might want to plan an itinerary, as there’s SO much to see and do. The little ones will love stepping into Stone Watchers: Vampire’s Lair, where the granite goblins guarding the area can come to life at any moment, while Enchanted Hollow – Trick or Treat is an immersive underground world inhabited by friendly critters. Throw in live shows, animals and fairground rides at dusk, and you have a fun-packed day they’ll remember forever.

LEGOLAND Windsor, 10, 11 and 17 October – 1 November

As you might expect, LEGOLAND Windsor has put a wholesome family twist on the Halloween theme, making its Brick or Treat event suitable for younger children. The LEGO Monsters are throwing their biggest Halloween party yet, with spooky surprises, live performers and ghoulish photo opportunities sprinkled around the resort. Returning for 2026 is the boogie-tastic Lord Vampyre’s House Party, while the usual array of rides and attractions add to the fun.

Halloween at Kew

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, 16 October – 1 November

When it comes to big calendar events, Kew (pictured above) never does things by halves – and Halloween is no exception. When darkness falls over the world-famous gardens this October, there will be plenty of unnatural things happening among all that nature. Meet legendary characters such as Dracula and the Headless Horseman, explore the all-new Cursed Tomb (if you dare!) and witness a mysterious Forest Ritual taking place. With live performers and themed food also on the agenda, it promises to be a Halloween humdinger.

Henry VIII’s former home is said to be one of the most haunted palaces in the country, making it the ideal destination for some Halloween adventures. Throughout October half-term, the estate will come alive with atmospheric projections, eerie sound effects and mysterious apparitions. Follow the special route through the historic palace, looking out for various ghostly figures from its past – including none other than William Shakespeare. With centuries of royal history all around you, it might be hard to separate the fake ghosts from the real ones…

The largest castle in Wales, Caerphilly has some big ideas for this year’s Halloween. A programme of themed events has been organised, featuring everything from a chilling quest around this centuries-old fortress to gruesome tales about medieval medicine. Halloween Nights at St Fagans

Cardiff, 29–31 October

Brace yourself for an evening of Welsh superstition and folklore as St Fagans hosts its annual Halloween Nights event. The much-loved open-air museum will be getting a spooky makeover, complete with numerous Halloween thrills and surprises. Conjure up creepy crafts, take part in an immersive scare run and watch a wicker man burn, before enjoying the traditional fairground and makers’ market.
