Newhaven Fort is one of the South Coast’s most fascinating historic sites and a brilliant day out whether you are bringing the family or enjoying a slower paced explore. Perched high on the cliffs above the English Channel, the fort has been guarding the Sussex coastline since the 19th century. As you walk through the gates you step straight into real stories of defence, resilience and everyday life during wartime Britain. This is not a polished stately home. It is solid brick, tunnels, gun emplacements and big skies. It feels authentic because it is.
For families there is plenty to keep everyone engaged. Children can head underground through atmospheric tunnels, peer into restored rooms, climb up to the ramparts and spot the huge cannons pointing out to sea. At the heart of the fort you’ll also find a large adventure playground, perfect for letting off steam between exploring exhibitions and tunnels. It gives parents a chance to pause with a coffee while children burn off energy in a safe open space. There are interactive displays and hands on elements that help bring the past to life without it ever feeling like a classroom.
For adults, especially those who enjoy social history and British heritage, the fort offers depth. Boundless members can book up to five subsidised tickets per membership. All tickets must be purchased in advance and no tickets will be available on the day. This event is exclusive to Boundless members and the booking member must attend with their guests.
