North Sails Cowes WeekWatch hundreds of boats take to the water for Cowes Week

Isle of Wight, 1–7 August

One of the highlights of the international sailing calendar, Cowes Week attracts some of the world’s top sailors alongside thousands of amateur competitors. Watch as more than 1,000 yachts and around 8,000 sailors take to the Solent for a week of exhilarating racing and lively shoreside celebrations.

This year marks the landmark 200th anniversary of Cowes Week, the world’s longest-running sailing regatta. As well as the action on the water, the bicentenary programme includes a Red Arrows display, spectacular fireworks and the debut of the 1826 Concert Stage, making this a memorable year to experience two centuries of sailing history.

As one of the world’s largest and most iconic street festivals, Notting Hill Carnival is a vibrant celebration of Caribbean culture that fills the streets of West London with spectacular costumes, floats, live bands, energetic dancers and delicious street food each summer.

The carnival opens with a ticketed event on Saturday, followed by a free family day on Sunday, offering a more relaxed atmosphere and plenty of entertainment for younger visitors. Weather conditions need to be just right for the mass ascents to take place, but even if the balloons remain grounded, there’s still plenty to enjoy throughout the weekend, including the atmospheric Nightglow. From fairground rides (additional charges apply) and food stalls to live entertainment and festival attractions, this family-friendly event is well worth a visit. Llanwrtyd Wells, 30 August

Experience one of Wales’ most eccentric sporting events at the World Bog Snorkelling Championships, held annually in the small market town of Llanwrtyd Wells, Mid Wales. Competitors race 120 yards through a water-filled peat bog trench, aiming to complete the course in the fastest time possible using only flippers and a snorkel while only doing doggy paddle. Many contestants wear fancy dress, making it a fun and slightly bonkers spectacle to watch.

This internationally renowned event attracts competitors from around the world, with the winner recording an impressive time of 1:18 in 2025. If you fancy taking on the challenge, entries close seven days before the event.

Beyond the bog, there’s also a full day of entertainment to enjoy, including local food and drink stalls, artisan crafts, live music performances, and a real ale and cider bar.

A trip to the seaside is always fun, but there’s even more reason to visit Aldeburgh during its much-loved Carnival weekend. Dating back to the 1890s, this historic three-day celebration transforms the Suffolk coastal town with colourful floats, lively parades, fairground attractions and entertainment for all ages, including duck races, treasure hunts and live performances.

This year’s Aldeburgh Carnival theme is Country & Eastern, so expect plenty of historic costumes, alongside the fun carnival atmosphere. Don’t mriss seeing the Carnival Queen crowned and the evening firework display on Sunday. There’s also a 10k run and swimming races if you fancy getting active.
