Meet the speaker - Peter Faulding

From childhood explorations of abandoned mine workings in Surrey to leading some of the UK’s most complex search and recovery operations, Peter Faulding has built a career at the edge of danger.

A former member of the Parachute Regiment Reserve, Peter founded Specialist Group International (SGI) in 1995. SGI is a 24-hour specialist rescue and forensic search organisation operating in the most challenging environments, including deep and fast-moving water, collapsed structures, confined spaces and complex crime scenes.

In 1999, Peter pioneered the use of high-frequency side-scan sonar for water searches, transforming underwater search operations across the UK and setting a new technical standard for missing-person investigations. Over more than three decades, he has played key roles in nationally significant and highly scrutinised cases.

Beyond operational work, Peter established the Lucas Dobson Water Safety Campaign, delivering free lifejackets to schools and promoting vital water-safety education nationwide. In 2024, his contribution to specialist search and public safety received royal recognition with a visit from HRH The Princess Royal.

Peter is also both a helicopter and fixed-wing pilot, holding UK and US FAA pilot licences, enabling rapid deployment and aerial assessment of challenging terrain.
