Discover the delights of the Dragonfly Festival

Nationwide, held at all nine WWT centres, until 22 September

There’s still time to join the WWT Dragonfly Festival and celebrate the magic of one of nature’s most captivating creatures. Taking place at all nine WWT centres, the festival offers a variety of nature-themed activities and events for all ages, such as family pond dipping, adventure play, macro photography and creative workshops.

Explore historic sites at Heritage Open Days

Each September, thousands of historic buildings and landmarks across the UK throw open their doors for European Heritage Open Days, giving you the chance to explore hidden places and uncover fascinating stories.

To help you learn more about local history and culture, there’s a full line-up of themed events. From guided walks and expert talks to hands-on workshops, many of which are completely free.

Join the Great British Beach Clean

Nationwide, 20-28 September

Every year, over eight million tonnes of plastic end up in our oceans, harming marine life and polluting our coastline. Joining a beach clean is a simple way to help, and is a great way to get children involved in marine conservation.

The Great British Beach Clean is a week-long nationwide citizen science project that encourages people to visit their local beach to do a litter pick, recording what they find. In 2024, volunteers collected 249,823 litter items, filling 1,675 bags!

The Marine Conservation Society organises hundreds of beach cleans across the UK,  making it easy to join an existing clean-up or organise your own beach clean.

Browse classics at the Isle of Wight Classic Motor Show

Isle of Wight, 6 & 7 September

Whether you're a devoted classic car enthusiast or simply enjoy a touch of nostalgia, don’t miss the Isle of Wight two-day Classic Motor show.

Expect to see hundreds of classic vehicles, including rare vintage vehicles from various eras, gathering from across the UK. You might even leave inspired to start your own collection.

Taking place at Newport Quay on 6th September and Ryde Esplanade on 7th September, this long-running charity event has been a highlight of the Isle of Wight calendar for over 20 years.

The Power of Trees exhibition at Kew Gardens

London, daily until 14 September

Discover The Power of Trees, an exhibition celebrating the timeless influence of trees in art and culture through everything from detailed botanical illustrations to immersive video installations at Kew Gardens.

A standout piece is Finnish artist Eija-Liisa Ahtila’s Horizontal–Vaakasuora, a striking portrayal of a towering spruce in Finland’s boreal forest, complete with natural soundscape. Entry to the exhibition is included with entry to the gardens.

Celebrate London's famous river at Totally Thames festival

London, 1-30 September

The River Thames has been at the heart of London for centuries, so what better way to honour it than with a month-long celebration? Totally Thames returns this September, bringing a packed programme of arts, culture and community events along the iconic waterway.

Over the month, enjoy live music, art exhibitions, guided walks and a wide variety of workshops. While some events are ticketed, there’s plenty to enjoy for free.

Two highlights of the festival are the Classic Boat Festival at St Katharine Docks on 6 and 7 September and the Great River Race on 20 September, an epic 21-mile rowing challenge.

Discover secret London at the Opera House Festival 2025

London 13-21 September

From iconic landmarks to historic places, this free event invites Londoners and visitors alike to explore the city’s rich architectural heritage and hear the stories behind the buildings that shape it.

The Open House Festival is London’s largest annual celebration of architecture, neighbourhoods and the communities that bring them to life.

Taking place across all 33 boroughs, the festival offers a rare opportunity to step inside hundreds of buildings, many of which are usually closed to the public.

Experience Regency Bath at the Jane Austen Festival

Bath, 12-21September

Step back in time at Bath’s annual Jane Austen Festival, a charming celebration of Regency life and literature.

Watch (or join in!) with the Grand Regency Costumed Promenade, a highlight of the festival that sees hundreds of Austen fans dressed in full Regency attire parading through the city streets.

The 10-day programme also features guided walks, fascinating talks, classical concerts, workshops, and traditional dance classes, all set against the backdrop of Bath’s stunning Georgian architecture.

Tuck in at South Glos Food & Drink Festival

Bristol, 13 & 14 September

Held on the lawns of Bristol & Bath Science Park, this lively food festival serves up the region’s finest local produce alongside a fantastic lineup of live music and entertainment for all ages to enjoy.

Walk with a Warden

WWT Llanelli, 20 September

Celebrate the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness by joining September’s Walk with a Warden walk at WWT Llanelli. This monthly guided walk offers the chance to explore WWT wetlands with an expert and learn more about seasonal wildlife highlights.

In September, discover fascinating fungi and learn about the ripe berries and fruits that provide vital nourishment for wildlife as they prepare for the colder months ahead.

St Fagans Food Festival

St Fagans National Museum of History, Cardiff, 13-14 September

If you’ve visited St Fagans National Museum of History near Cardiff, you’ll already know it’s one of Wales’ top free attractions for families of all ages. But it’s about to get even better.

The museum grounds will be filled with over 80 stalls showcasing the best of local Welsh produce as it hosts St Fagans Food Festival. Expect handmade crafts, family-friendly activities, and a packed schedule of live music.

Entry to the museum and festival is completely free, but you’ll need to pay for parking or use public transport.

Rock out at Balstock 2025

Herefordshire, 12-14 September

From 12-14 September, the historic market town of Baldock in Hertfordshire transforms into a lively venue as it hosts Balstock, one of the UK’s biggest free music festivals.

For three days, pubs, bars, and pop-up stages across town showcase an eclectic mix of local talent and rising stars from across the country. Listen to indie, rock, folk, or something a little more experimental, browse the stalls and enjoy delicious local food and drink.

Show off your classic car at Hinckley Classic Motor Show

Leicestershire, 21 September

Back for its 14th year, Hinkley Classic Motor Show is one of the largest in the UK, showcasing hundreds of vintage and heritage vehicles. There’s also live music, family-friendly entertainment, and a variety of food stalls, making it a fun day out for the whole family.

Last year, more than 800 proud owners took part, and visitor entry is free. If you’d like to show off your classic car, it’s also free for exhibitors.

Cheer on boats in Newcastle's Dragon Boat Race

Newcastle, 28 September

Each year, teams of paddlers take to the River Tyne in brightly decorated dragon boats to compete in a fast-paced, adrenaline-fuelled race that’s as fun to watch as it is to take part in.

The Newcastle Dragon Boat Race is a great riverside day out for all ages. After cheering on racers, there’s no shortage of entertainment off the water too. Find street food, live music, family activities and a festival atmosphere throughout the day.

Watch Kendal Torchlight Carnival

Kendal, 27 September

Kendal’s much-loved torchlight procession has been illuminating the town since 1970, but it’s not just about the evening spectacle. By day, the streets come alive with vibrant music, street performances and family-friendly entertainment, making it a fun event for all ages.

This year’s Kendal Torchlight Carnival theme is celebrating the seasons, and there’s still time to become a torch bearer if you’re quick.

York Food and Drink Festival

York, 19-28 September

Set in the heart of one of England’s most historic cities, the York Food and Drink Festival celebrates the best of Yorkshire with a delicious selection of local and regional food and drink.

Fire up your neurons at the British Science Festival

Liverpool, 10-14 September

European Heritage Open Days

Sites across Northern Ireland, 13-14 September

Step into Northern Ireland’s rich past with European Heritage Open Days (EHOD) 2025. Over the weekend, more than 200 historic sites, cultural landmarks and hidden places will open their doors to the public, completely free of charge.

Enjoy guided tours, talks, living history re-enactments, family fun days and more, as communities across Northern Ireland celebrate their shared heritage.

Drink in the views at Loch Lomond Food & Drink Festival

Balloch 6 & 7 September

Loch Lomond’s breathtaking shores are stunning in all seasons, but foodies might want to time their visit to attend Loch Lomond Food and Drink festival.

Free family day at Lochaber Live

Fort William, 12-14 September

Lochaber Live is returning to Fort William this September, following the success of the 2024 festival after a 30-year hiatus.  
Enjoy a weekend of live music and local culture set against the stunning backdrop of Fort William. You’ll need to purchase day tickets for Friday and Saturday, but free family day tickets are available for Sunday.

This free family day will feature lively performances from two fantastic local acts – The Robert Robertson Dance Band and The Martainn Skene Dance Band, plus a live recording of BBC Radio Scotland’s iconic Take the Floor, hosted by Scottish musician and broadcaster Gary Innes.
