About the event

7pm to 9.30pm, Thursday 15 January 2026

Join the Swindon Group for their first fascinating talk of the year.

This week's topic looks at 'Life, Death, and the Tabloids' by Ned Kelly.

The main point is that you can very rarely trust anything medical that appears in the tabloids. How often are we told that coffee makes us immortal and the following week gives us cancer? We often see headlines about what is a 'breakthrough' in the treatment or prevention or diagnosis of some condition which on further examination is no such thing. Ned will explain why so many tabloid headlines are misleading when it comes to health and what needs to be done before you can actually claim a medicine or food or intervention is helpful or not.

Ned Kelly, real name Neil but everyone calls him Ned (youngsters these days don't know why!) spent 40 years in the Pharmaceutical Industry. The last 20 years involved a role called Medical Science Liaison, educating and training healthcare professionals (as well as company staff) on forthcoming medicines.

Refreshments will be available as usual. There is also free parking but do remember to register your car on arrival at reception. You’ll also find information on future events, opportunities to view past club magazines, and time to socialise in the bar.
