Have fun by the sea

Herne Bay Festival, Kent, until 17 August

When it comes to festivals, the residents of Herne Bay don’t do things by halves. The Kent town’s big summer event lasts for a whole month (starting in mid July). While some activities cost money, there are loads that don’t – ranging from art trails to craft workshops, story sessions to gig nights. Making it a double whammy, the event overlaps with the Herne Bay Jazz & Swing Festival (15-17 August), which also features plenty of free shows.

Spend time in the great outdoors

Alfresco Arts, London, throughout August

Most people think of Canary Wharf as a business district – but you might change your mind after visiting Alfresco Arts; an annual event that sees the area’s green spaces filled with fun activities throughout the summer. This year’s programme includes plenty of exciting free events, ranging from classical musical recitals to outdoor theatre shows, children’s comedy to open water swimming. Providing the weather holds up, it’ll be the place to go!

Learn some aviation history

Talk on the History of the Red Arrows Display Team, Bexhill-on-Sea, 5 August

Thanks to their thrilling aerial displays, the Red Arrows have become part of British culture. But how did this daring team come about, and what does it take to perform one of their spectacular routines? The Boundless Bexhill and District Group will be hosting a talk on the history of the Red Arrows Display Team in which expert Guy Bartlett will uncover the secrets of these fearless fliers. Not only will you learn some fascinating history, but you might make some new friends too.

Listen and laugh

Comedy Classics on Vinyl, Waltham Cross, 12 August

From Peter Sellers to Charlie Drake, there have been some brilliant comedy records over the years, bringing joy to people of all ages. In this talk, hosted by the North East London Group at Bishops College, Waltham Cross, enthusiast John Foster will dust off his discs to present an evening of Comedy Classics on Vinyl. As well as playing snippets of songs, both famous and obscure, he’ll bring you the stories behind the laughter.

In order to attend this event, you’ll need to be a part of the Boundless North East London Group.

Feel awe-struck

Greenwich + Docklands International Festival, London, 22 August – 6 September

According to The Guardian, the Greenwich + Docklands International Festival “makes an unrivalled contribution to the happiness of the people of London”. Whether or not you live in the city, you’re welcome to enjoy an eclectic range of events and activities, including high-wire walks, on-water theatre shows and spectacular circus displays. Attend a street party

Notting Hill Carnival, London, 24 & 25 August

As one of the world’s biggest free events, Notting Hill Carnival needs no introduction. Every year, this kaleidoscopic celebration attracts around two million people to the streets of West London, who come to witness the endless stream of musicians, dancers and food stalls. If you have little ones, aim to attend on Sunday 24 August, which is family day – look out for the special kids’ parade, featuring dozens of youngsters in colourful costumes.

Get into the groove

Hip-Hop: A Welsh Story, Cardiff, until 22 February 2026

From Goldie Lookin Chain to Astroid Boys, Wales has a long history of making hip-hop music. Held at the National Museum Cardiff, Hip-Hop: A Welsh Story explores the impact that this exciting genre has had on Wales’ youth, delving into the sounds, the dances and the fashions that this love of hip-hop has spawned. As well as attending the exhibition, be sure to download the complementary Spotify playlist, which features tracks from all the major players.

Jazz up your life

Stompin’ on the Quomps, Christchurch, 2 August

With its stunning views over the River Stour, Christchurch Quay – aka the Quomps – is the perfect setting for a summer festival. Now in its 29th year, Stompin’ on the Quomps gives you the opportunity to hear talented jazz musicians from the local area and beyond. This year’s programme includes everything from Latin to big band swing – and there are even zumba sessions for anyone who’s feeling energetic enough to take part!

Witness the big lift-off

Bristol International Balloon Fiesta, Bristol, 8-10 August

Seeing dozens of colourful orbs ascending skyward is a breathtaking experience – which is why thousands of people head for the Long Ashton estate each year for the Bristol International Balloon Fiesta. The weather has to be just right for lift-off to take place, but even if the balloons stay grounded, there’s plenty to do and see, from funfair rides (costs apply) to trade stalls.

British Fireworks Championships, Plymouth, 13 & 14 August

Who said you have to wait until November to see a fireworks display? Every August, Plymouth plays host to the British Fireworks Championships, a spectacular two-night extravaganza in which the nation’s best pyrotechnic companies battle it out in the sky. As well as the bangers and rockets, there will be live entertainment and food stalls, making it a great event for people of all ages.

Step back in time

Harrowbeer 1940s Weekend, Yelverton, 17 August

Join the Boundless Tamar Group at one of the South West’s biggest vintage festivals. The Harrowbeer 1940s Weekend will feature Second World War aviation displays, live music from the era, plus a range of themed stalls. Pop into the Boundless tent for a free cup of tea and bacon or vegetarian bap (you’ll need to let the club know by 11 August if you want one of these). Period costume isn’t essential, but it’s certainly encouraged!

Go giggin'

Old City Sounds, Bristol, 23 August

Venture through the cobbled streets of Bristol’s old city today, and your ears will be filled with a cacophony of musical styles. Now in its third year, Old City Sounds sees numerous venues putting on live entertainment, ranging from bands and singers to DJ sets and family activities. The event ties in with The Old Duke Jazz Festival, an annual three-day shindig taking place inside one of Bristol’s most famous pubs.

Have a family picnic

Phoenix Festival, Cirencester, 23 & 24 August

Touted as “the Cotswolds’ only totally free music and arts event”, the annual Phoenix Festival welcomes around 15,000 revellers to the picturesque Abbey Grounds in Cirencester for two days of live performers, dance displays, family activities and wellbeing sessions. Bring some camping chairs and a picnic, and settle back for some fun in the sun.

Admire some creative talents

Art in the Park, Leamington Spa, 2 & 3 August

There are some hugely talented people in the Midlands, and many of them will be showcasing their efforts at this year’s Art in the Park. Held amid the beautiful surroundings of Leamington’s Jephson Gardens and Mill Gardens, it brings together not just artists and craftspeople but food producers and live entertainers, too. Come and browse the stalls, shows and demonstrations – it may inspire you!

Go down to the woods today

Robin Hood Festival, Nottinghamshire, 2 & 3, 9 & 10, 16 & 17 and 23 & 24 August

The legend of Robin Hood is very much alive and well in Nottinghamshire – indeed, there’s a whole festival dedicated to the fabled outlaw. Spread across the weekends of August, this popular event sees thousands of people arrive in Sherwood Forest (where else!) to be entertained by jousting bouts, falconry displays, medieval storytellers and much more. A prince of thieves he may have been, but this won’t cost you a dime.

Have a beach ball

Aldeburgh Carnival, Suffolk, 16-18 August

A few days at the seaside is always wonderful, but there’s even more to get excited about during Aldeburgh Carnival weekend. Dating back to the 1890s, this three-day party sees the coastal town come alive with floats, fairground rides, live entertainment and more. This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating Summertime’, so expect colourful costumes and positive vibes by the bucketload!

Gear up for some vintage fun

Warwick Classic Car Show, Warwick, 17 August

The phrase ‘oldies but goodies’ certainly applies to the annual Warwick Classic Car Show, which sees the town’s Market Place and surrounding streets humming with the sound of vintage vehicles. Primarily featuring pre-1990 cars, but with some hot rods, vans and lorries thrown in for good measure, this lively showcase is a must for enthusiasts and their families.

Take it to the river

Stockton International Riverside Festival, Stockton-on-Tees, 1-3 August

The North East’s biggest free festival returns for three more days of scintillating shows. Over 100 outdoor events are scheduled to take place over the weekend, covering everything from music and dance to circus skills and theatre. With performers coming from France, Korea, Catalonia and Belgium, this riverside gala has become a truly global celebration.

Have a bloomin' good time

Knowsley Feelgood Festival and Flower Show, Liverpool, 3 August

Health and horticulture are the main ingredients of this weekend’s festivities at Knowsley Park, Liverpool. Saturday is dedicated to personal wellbeing, with classes and stalls themed around making you feel your best. On Sunday, the focus turns to flowers, with some baking and crafts thrown in for good measure. Whether you attend one event or both, you’re sure to leave with your soul enriched.

Look to the skies

Blackpool Air Show, Blackpool, 9 & 10 August

It’s not just Blackpool Tower that visitors will be gazing up at this weekend – there will also be a procession of aircraft soaring overhead. Highlights of this year’s Blackpool Air Show will include a Battle of Britain memorial flight, aerobatic wingwalkers and a flypast by the legendary Red Arrows. Once your neck starts to ache, enjoy some of the myriad activities taking place on the ground, including cockpit experiences, stalls and children’s entertainment.

Enjoy a retro celebration

Lytham 1940s Weekend, Lytham St Annes, 16 & 17 August

Remember the music, clothes and vehicles of the 1940s at Lytham St Annes’ annual nostalgia fest. The promenade and its surrounding streets will be buzzing with activity, with everything from car and weapon displays to fashion shows and tribute acts taking place. If the weather’s good, you could even spend a couple of hours relaxing on the beach.

Do as the Romans do

Festa Italiana, Manchester, 22-24 August

Whether you’re passionate about pizza, rave about risotto or love a limoncello, you can enjoy a taste of la dolce vita at Manchester’s Cathedral Gardens this weekend. The brainchild of local restaurateur Maurizio Cecco, Festa Italiana is a vibrant celebration of Italian food and culture, featuring everything from cooking shows and masterclasses to stalls and kids’ activities. Our mouths are watering just thinking about it.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Edinburgh, 1-25 August

Much like Glastonbury and Henley Royal Regatta, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe is one of those things that you simply have to visit at least once in your life. Making the Scottish celebration even more alluring is the fact that many of the events  – from stand-up comedy to magic shows and burlesque – are free of charge. Grab your diary, visit the website and start planning a weekend of fun.

Have a Sunday fun day

Sundays on the Maritime Mile, Belfast, 3, 10, 17, 24 & 31 August

From the Titanic exhibition to HMS Caroline, Belfast’s Maritime Mile is packed with world-famous attractions. If you don’t want to spend any money, head down there on Sundays to enjoy some free family entertainment. Listen to local musicians, immerse yourself in hands-on science displays and even have a round of mini-golf – it’s the perfect way to relax before you go back to work.
