The ski’s the limit: hitting the slopes in Viehhofen, Austria

Peter and Helen Cousins, retired bankers who live in London, are passionate about skiing. “We love the European sites, especially Stigliano in Tuscany and Coreggia in Puglia, but for skiing you really can’t beat Viehhofen in Austria,” they say.  “We go every year!”
“The site at Viehhofen is superb” continues Peter.  “Our friends have tried to persuade us to go to other ski resorts but there’s really no need – the skiing there is great, always fresh and challenging with a great snow record.  Why go anywhere else?”
Over the past 15 years there has been enormous change and expansion in the Saalbach Valley, with the original Saalbach-Hinterglemm-Leogang ski area being modernised and extended. At the start of the 2019/20 season, Viehhofen got its own ski lift, connecting it to Zell am See and by ski bus to Kaprun.  “They are always investing in the infrastructure with upgraded lifts and extensive snowmaking capability.  And now Kaprun is accessible, you can ski on one of Austria’s high glaciers with a challenging black run known as the ‘Black Mamba’,” adds Peter.
“One of the other attractions about Austria are the small local mountain restaurants and traditional villages,” says Helen.  “They’re full of character and the people are so warm and friendly.”
So where next?  “Well actually we’re planning to discover the delights of the UK next, with a visit to St Brides in Pembrokeshire to enjoy the coastal scenery. Then it’s back to the slopes, of course!”

Par for the course: golfing in Norfolk

Police officer Gordon, together with wife Alison, a health visitor, and children, have enjoyed HPB holidays across Europe – but we caught up with him on a golfing get-together with three non-Bondholder friends, enjoying a week at HPB’s Barnham Broom home in Norfolk. The county boasts myriad attractions, but for Gordon, it’s Barnham Broom’s two Championship-standard golf courses that provide the real draw.
“We’ve done a few golfing trips in northern France,” says Gordon. “But with the poor sterling-euro exchange rate, it was just getting too expensive. However, Barnham Broom is far from an inferior option; the two courses really are very good, both pose difficulties, and over the past 12 years the Hill Course has matured to become every bit as challenging – and as rewarding – as the Valley Course. We’ve been here the last couple of years, and it’s hugely enjoyable; the off-course facilities are really good, and very reasonably priced.”
For the future? More golf, obviously, and more family HPB holidays. “We’re booked into Sibton Park in Kent just after Christmas, which we’re looking forward to. I’d also love to take the children to Tigh Mor Trossachs in Perthshire.”

Best foot forward: walking breaks with HPB

Those who like to get out on two feet (or wheels!) during their breaks may be inspired by John and Linda Corbett.
“We tend to gravitate to the HPB sites surrounded by good walking country,” says Linda. “Which is most of them! We like to take our dog, Molly, with us – so the fact that so many sites are dog-friendly is another plus.” Overseas, they’ve been to El Balcón de Santa Ana in La Gomera, the Canary Islands; La Reserva de Biniorella in Majorca; Stigliano in Tuscany, Italy (this property is pictured at the top of the article); Santa Rosa in Lanzarote, the Canary Islands, and more.
As well as walking, the Corbetts have become keen cyclists. John and Linda have done the 64-mile Manchester-to-Blackpool ride, the 29-mile Great Manchester Cycle and the Cheshire 100, all in aid of Manchester’s Christies cancer hospital.
“We took our bikes to Le Manoir du Hilguy in Brittany,” says Linda. “Cycling around the Breton countryside was a lovely, relaxed way to explore the region.”

Terms and conditions

*Exclusive holidays for life: An initial payment from £5,000 and a quarterly fee of under £38 (that is around £150 a year), which can increase in line with but not exceed the Retail Price Index Excluding Mortgage Interest (RPIX), gives you access to all HPB’s holiday homes. For each HPB holiday, you will pay a no-profit user charge covering only property running and maintenance costs and use of on-site facilities. The average charge is the same throughout the year, and for a studio is around £360 a week and £540 for a two-bedroom property. Larger properties are also available. After an initial charge of 25% your money is invested in a fund of holiday properties and securities. The fund itself meets annual charges of 2.5% of its net assets at cost, calculated monthly. Your investment return is purely in the form of holidays and, as with most investments, your capital is at risk. You can surrender your investment to the company after two years or more (subject to deferral in exceptional circumstances) but you will get back less than you invested because of the charges referred to above, as well as other overheads and changes in the value of the fund’s properties and securities.
