Are you more "feet up" or "foot down"?

We commissioned a survey from the University of the West of England (UWE) to look into two things: to find out more about how people feel while doing activities, and to understand their motivation behind chosen certain experiences. The results were fascinating…

Here's what we found

Did you know according to research the average person in the UK stops being a thrill-seeker at the age of 43, but becomes more adventurous again in their fifties?

In our recent survey, conducted by the University of the West of England (UWE), researchers Dr Dan Knox and Dr Ed Little analysed the emotional responses that dictate which activities people enjoy in their free time…

The research found that, as we get older, we’re no longer lead by adrenaline and the element of surprise. Instead, we seek relaxation, joy and fulfillment from the activities we choose. On average, 43 is the point when we decide to relax, increase our desire for comfort and put our “feet up”. But don’t be fooled, people are far from ready to give up the adrenaline rush for good.

UWE researchers noted that, as we enter our fifties, we recapture our need for excitement and adrenaline by putting our “foot down” and increasing our desire to try high-intensity activities such as track days, balloon rides, or even bungee jumping. It’s suggested that this could be fuelled by the desire to tick off ‘bucket lists’, to seek exhilarating experiences after children have left home, or maybe it's down to the proverbial mid-life crisis.

The research also revealed that people from Northern Ireland are the most adventurous in the UK, based on the wide range and number of different breaks taken in the last three years, followed by London and the North-East of England.

It was also interesting to see that we seem to prioritise our experiences over the places that we visit, showing that our emotional connection to the activities we choose has more importance than location. Overall the research findings have been invaluable, helping us to further understand people’s personal motivations when it comes to choosing experiences and activities. This knowledge will help us to tailor our bespoke event packages, short breaks and holidays provided through membership of Boundless.

Research was conducted by UWE and based on a OnePoll survey of 2,000 UK residents (18+), with fieldwork undertaken in August 2017. Survey results were interpreted and analysed by Dr Dan Knox and Dr Ed Little from UWE’s Business and Management department.

In October 2016, 6.4m Brits took overseas travel - an 11% increase on the previous year (ONS, Overseas travel and tourism, monthly provisional results: July 2017), and 5.2m holidayed in the UK - an 8% rise on the same period in 2015 (VisitBritain, Great Britain Tourism Survey: October 2016).
